From September 7 to 10, China University of Geosciences (CUG) held a series of orientation activities to help newly admitted international students of the 2026 intake better adapt to their study and life in China. Covering university introduction, laws and regulations, and daily life guidance, the orientation program kicked off the academic journey in China for fresh students from all over the world.

At the opening of the event, Mr. FANG Yuxin introduced CUG development history, disciplinary strengths and achievements in international education. Afterwards, a campus tour and a visit to the History Museum of CUG were arranged for the new students, enabling them to gain a comprehensive understanding of the campus environment.

Police officers and staff members of the University Security Department elaborated on China’s laws and regulations, campus safety precautions and student codes of conduct. They emphasized on the importance of abiding by Chinese laws and university rules, clarifying the serious consequences of violations, ranging from warnings and demerits to repatriation. The session served as a stark reminder for the new students.

Ms. YANG Su interpreted the regulations concerning Chinese Government Scholarships and introduced relevant administrative requirements. She reminded all new students that they must observe the attendance management system during their studies, comply with the university’s attendance rules, make steady academic progress and meet scheduled learning milestones, to satisfy all criteria for retaining their scholarship eligibility.

Ms. JIN Xin and Mr. LUO Jingang from the Accommodation Management Center lectured on dormitory management for all incoming international students. They provided a thorough interpretation of the university’s dormitory management rules and regulations, with a focus on dormitory safety, interior hygiene management and visitor access control. The teachers also guided students to study the core clauses of the accommodation commitment letter, clarified students’ rights and obligations regarding campus residence, and urged all students to strictly abide by dormitory management regulations, faithfully fulfill their commitments, and jointly maintain a safe, orderly and harmonious dormitory living environment.

Ms. DAI Xinran lectured on visa and residence permit application procedures for international students. She elaborated on the residence permit application process, required documents, processing time limits, and legal consequences of overstay. She reminded students to attach great importance to the validity period of their documents, prepare relevant materials such as passports and insurance certificates in advance, complete online applications and offline submissions on schedule, and strictly abide by China’s entry-exit administrative regulations to ensure legal residence in China.

Ms. TANG Guiling lectured on “Cultural Adaptation and Mental Health”. Centering on mental health criteria, cultural adaptation issues and coping strategies, the lecture systematically illustrated the WHO definition of health, mental health standards for university students, and the four stages of culture shock. Combining practical cases, she analyzed common adaptation challenges in language learning, academic studies, daily life and interpersonal communication.

Ms. Tang encouraged new international students to learn the Chinese language, embrace local culture, make full use of academic resources, and participate in campus activities. Such efforts help students enhance their communication and time-management skills, build self-confidence, and seek support initiatively when needed.

Mr. JIANG Wenyu and Mr. DAMIEN introduced the university’s social practice programs the International Student Union (ISU). They explained the participation procedures and significance of social practice and volunteer activities, encouraging international students to step out of the campus to personally experience and engage in China’s social development. In addition, the teachers illustrated the functions and recruitment requirements of the International Student Union. They called on students to actively join student organizations to enrich their extracurricular life and build a platform for exchanges between Chinese and foreign youth.

Ms. LIU Yun and Mr. FAN Yanpeng from the Academic Affairs Office lectured on talent cultivation arrangements. They covered the interpretation of talent cultivation programs, phased learning tasks and credit requirements, timetable inquiry methods, course selection and classroom discipline guidelines, student status modification procedures, academic early warning mechanisms, as well as graduation application processes and relevant standards. The session familiarized new students with academic management regulations and make sound study plans for their future studies.

Mr. LUO Wenxu and Ms. TU Siyi communicated with new international students on how to lead a rewarding university life. Combining the actual study and living experience of international students, the two teachers encouraged students to adopt a rigorous learning attitude, solidify their professional knowledge, actively participate in campus cultural events and practical activities, and arrange their spare time reasonably. They guided the freshmen to set clear goals and engage in active communication, so as to improve their academic competence, enrich personal experience, and make the most of their precious study time at CUG.

In addition, practical lectures on medical insurance, AIDS and infectious disease prevention were offered. The sessions explained the enrolment and reimbursement procedures of medical insurance for international students, disseminated knowledge about protection against AIDS and common infectious diseases, and introduced health precautions. These sessions help new international students grasp basic health knowledge, raise their awareness of self-protection, and encourage them to attach importance to physical health during their campus stay so that they can pursue their studies and daily life safely.

The orientation program not only helped new international students quickly familiarize themselves with the university’s management regulations and service resources, but also built a solid platform for communication and interaction.
