Introduction 

The Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral Program (Type A) is administered through the Chinese Embassy or the designated dispatching authority in the applicant’s home country. Applicants must apply through the relevant authority in accordance with its application procedures and deadlines. As part of the application process, applicants may need to obtain a pre-admission letter from their intended Chinese university. China University of Geosciences (CUG) provides this letter to eligible applicants to support their scholarship applications. This guide explains the application procedures and requirements for obtaining a pre-admission letter from CUG.

Application Period

October 21, 2026 – March 31, 2027

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health. The academic and age requirements are as follows:

· Undergraduate programs: Applicants must have a high school diploma and be under 25 years old.

· Master’s programs: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years old.

· Doctoral programs: Applicants must hold a master’s degree and be under 40 years old.

· General scholar programs: Applicants must have a high school diploma or higher and be under 45 years old.

· Senior scholar programs: Applicants must hold a master’s degree or be an associate professor or above, and be under 50 years old.

How to Apply

1. Email your application to CUG. Send electronic copies of your application materials to overseas@cug.edu.cn. Use a clear subject line, for example: “Pakistan + Full Name + Pre-Admission Letter Application.”

2. Wait for the document review. CUG will review your materials. If your application meets CUG’s requirements, the pre-admission letter will be sent to you by email.

3. Submit your materials to the relevant authority. Submit the pre-admission letter and the other required documents to the Chinese embassy or the dispatching authority responsible for overseas study in your home country, following its instructions.

4. Complete the scholarship application. Log in to the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System at https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/#/login and select the appropriate program category (Type A or Type C, as applicable). The “Agency Number” should be confirmed with the Chinese embassy or dispatching authority in your country. Please select China University of Geosciences as your first-choice university.

5. Submit before the deadline. Make sure all required application documents are submitted to the relevant embassy or dispatching authority before its deadline. Check with that authority for country-specific procedures and deadlines.

Required Application Materials

1. Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form, generated automatically after you submit your application in the CSC system. Complete it in Chinese or English.

2. Copy of the passport information page. Your passport should remain valid beyond September 2027. If it expires before then, renew it before applying.

3. Highest academic qualification certificate. If it is not in Chinese or English, provide a notarized translation. Applicants who are still studying should provide a pre-graduation or enrollment certificate stating the expected graduation date; the original qualification certificate must be presented upon registration.

4. Academic transcripts, in Chinese or English, with notarized translations if required.

5. Study plan or research proposal in Chinese or English: at least 200 words for undergraduate applicants, 500 words for non-degree students, and 800 words for graduate students.

6. Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors, written in Chinese or English.

7. HSK certificate or English-language proficiency certificate, if applicable.

8. For undergraduate applicants: the transcript of the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA). For science or engineering programs, the required subjects are Chinese (Science), Mathematics, and either Chemistry or Physics. For liberal arts programs, the required subjects are Chinese (Liberal Arts) and Mathematics. Please check https://www.csca.cn/ for exam details and arrangements.

9. Foreigner Physical Examination Form, including blood-test results, valid for six months.

10. A valid non-criminal record certificate, usually issued within six months before the application date.

11. CUG Supervisor’s Recommendation Form for Excellent International Students, required for applicants to master’s and PhD programs.

12. Other supporting documents, such as awards, publications, or published papers, if available.

Important Notes

1. This pre-admission letter is intended for applicants seeking Chinese Government Scholarship funding through non-university channels, such as the Bilateral Program (Type A) or other applicable programs handled by an embassy or dispatching authority.

2. Applicants applying directly to CUG for the Chinese Government Scholarship High-Level Postgraduate Program or the Silk Road Scholarship Program should not apply for this type of pre-admission letter.

3. After receiving a pre-admission letter from CUG, select China University of Geosciences as your first-choice university in the CSC application system. Each scholarship recipient may receive only one Chinese Government Scholarship.

4. The final host university, field of study, supporting category, and scholarship duration may be adjusted by the China Scholarship Council according to the funding requirements, the host university’s capacity, the applicant’s qualifications, and other relevant factors.

5. Scholarship funding is not reserved if the recipient fails to register by the required registration deadline. Scholarship recipients are generally not permitted to change their host university, field of study, or duration of study unless they give up the scholarship.

6. The final scholarship decision is made by the relevant scholarship authorities. For information about the final result and country-specific requirements, contact the authority responsible for accepting your application.
