International Education College
China University of Geosciences
International Education College (IEC) at China University of Geosciences (CUG) was founded in 2002 and became an independent institution in 2024. It operates together with the “Belt and Road” International Education and Training Center for Geosciences, serving as the university’s administrative authority for study-in-China programs. IEC consists of four internal offices: General Affairs Office, International Student Affairs Office, International Student Admission and Program Development Office, and International Student Academic Affairs and Training Office, which ensure the orderly operation of all affairs.
History and Philosophy:The university began enrolling international students in 1954, accumulating more than 70 years of experience in international education. Guided by a strategic perspective, the university integrates study-in-China education into the national development agenda and actively builds a high-level international education system, contributing to building China into a global hub for geosciences education. Leveraging disciplinary and research strengths, IEC develops branded majors and high-quality programs focused on geosciences, resources, and the environment, providing intellectual and talent support for the joint development of the “Belt and Road” initiative.
Platform Construction and National Strategy: As one of the earliest universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to enroll Chinese Government Scholarship students, the university is also a Chinese Government Scholarship Preparatory Education Institution. It has jointly established four national-level platforms with the China Geological Survey:
·Wuhan College, China–SCO Geoscience Cooperation Research Center
·ASEAN College, China–ASEAN Geoscience Cooperation Center
·Africa College, China–Africa Geoscience Cooperation Center
·“Belt and Road” International Education and Training Center for Geosciences
These platforms have significantly aligned the university’s international education with national strategies and enhanced its contribution.
Student Scale and Structure:Currently, IEC has more than 1,300 international students from over 100 countries and regions, with 85% from “Belt and Road” partner countries. It has formed a discipline system featuring geosciences and coordinated development of multiple fields, establishing a full-chain education structure: preparatory program → bachelor’s → master’s → doctoral programs.
Education Quality and Achievements:Committed to quality first and academic excellence, IEC implements initiatives to improve student recruitment quality and academic competence. It has launched branded academic events such as Silk Road Lectures and Silk Road Doctoral Forum, with over 100 sessions held to date. In recent years, international students have published 319 high-level academic papers (T1/T2), and received more than 80 awards at or above the provincial/ministerial level. The university passed the first round of national Study-in-China Education Quality Certification in 2016 and completed re-certification in 2024.
Industry-Education Integration and Collaborative Education:IEC deepens university-enterprise and university-local cooperation, creating a distinctive model of industry-enabled international talent development. It maintains close partnerships with leading enterprises and institutions, including China Geological Survey and its six regional centers, CNOOC, China Three Gorges Corporation, Zijin Mining, and Wanrun Mining. Aligned with national energy and resource security strategies, the university co-builds industry-education-research integration and practice bases, and establishes enterprise-specific scholarships to cultivate high-caliber international professionals for China’s “Going Global” strategy.
National Conditions Education and Global Communication:IEC attaches great importance to ideological guidance and cultural education for international students, organizing featured events such as Voice of Geosciences and Dangui International Cultural Festival. It promotes the global alumni network, establishing country-specific alumni associations in Vietnam, Laos, Pakistan, Africa, and other regions. The university conferred an honorary doctorate upon H.E. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, and has cultivated outstanding graduates including Dr. Sandy Edward Hinga, Minister of Trade and Investment of Sierra Leone. These efforts have strengthened China’s friendly exchanges and elevated the university’s international reputation.
Future Vision:Moving forward, IEC will uphold its mission of cultivating international students who know China, befriend China, and love China. It will continue to strengthen the "Study at CUG" brand, enhance the quality and global influence of study-in-China education, and cultivate more high-level international talents with a global vision, supporting China’s high-level opening up.
