Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences, established with the approval of Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources of P.R.china, is an institution of higher education to cultivate jewelry professional talents, promote jewelry technology and serve jewelry industry.

History of GIC

1993

First GIC Gemologist Diploma in China was issued by Gemmological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). It is the first gemological education certificate issued in China. Gemological Quality Supervision and Inspection Center in Hubei Province was established

1994

Commenced undergraduate education programs

1997

Commenced enrolling undergraduate students

1999

Commenced enrolling postgraduate students

2004

Commenced enrolling doctoral students. Established the first doctoral program in gemology

Successfully held 29th International Gemological Conference

2006

Established Wuhan Jewelry Productivity Promotion Center

2007

Established Vocational School of Academic Jewelry

Won the honor of Brand Specialty of Hubei Provincial

Permitted by the Ministry of Education to award degree of Masters of Fine Art (MFA)

Approved as the Hubei Province level I key subjects unit

Officially founded Jewelry Inheritance and Innovation Development Research Center of Hubei Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, and launched Wuhan • Chinese Gem Valley Project in October of the same year

2015

Signed cooperation agreement with internationally renowned gemological training institute, HRD Antwerp, and established HRD Antwerp Qualified Diamond Grader Course. The same year, the institute was selected as Vice Director Committee Member of Metal Technics Professional Committee of China Arts and Crafts Association.

Academic Units

College focuses on undergraduate education in gommological direction since 1994 and then become to be the first institution to have independent under graduate course, master, doctor in jewelry professional disciplines, building to the complete jewelry degree education that train various kinds of high-level jewelry professionals. At present, the college set up two undergraduate professional-Gemology and Material Technology(National characteristic specialty ) and Products Design(Jewelry Direction); four master degree course -Gommology, Materials Engineering(Gem material), Design and Art design; one PHD course for Gommology. The Design is the key subject in Hubei Province and the jewelry inheritance and innovation center is key research base of humanities and social science in Hubei Province.

International communication

College attaches great importance to an international school, with the international mainstream of jewelry from the founding institutions to set up and maintain close teaching and research cooperation and exchanges. At present, college established a joint training students, teachers, exchange of visits between education, science and technology cooperation and academic exchange relations of cooperation with School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University(BIAD), university of London's creative Arts (UCA), the British Psyche of France's High School (INSEEC), Ryan business school (ESC), National Institute of Gem (ING), at the University of Rochester Institute of Technology, College of Art and Design (RIT), the American College of Gem (GIA) and other famous institution of jewelry education.

University-industry cooperation

Close combination, service to the jewelry industry and local economic development is a distinct characteristics of college. College not only transport thousands of vocational and technical training and expert arch year, also has established the most authoritative domestic jewelry testing institution in Wuhan, as well as few gem testing laboratories in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhushan and Yichang to serve the local jewelry industry. The products of gemstone identification equipment were sold out with highly praised through the country.

The project of turquoise resource protection and development supported by GIC made the turquoise become the biggest industry in the county and the price of turquoise has doubled.With the support of GIC, Hubei Yichang International Jewelry Industrial Park exports the international market nearly 5 billion yuan products each year. Wuhan Huangpi Chow Tai Fook jewelry Culture Industrial Park built in support by GIC was constructed and put into operation since 1994. The project Jewelry Culture Street in Lumo Road and Valley of Jewelry promoted by GIC(officially launched in October 2014) will have a huge impact on the jewelry culture industry in Wuhan and Hubei Province.
