School of Engineering, China University of Geosciences, traces its root to two departments of Beijing College of Geology: Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology founded in 1952 and Department of Exploration Engineering founded in 1954. With a long history of education and comprehensive disciplinary strength, Faculty of Engineering has evolved an educational program that features geosciences and provides a fertile ground for comprehensive disciplinary scientific research and talent development. With a high-quality faculty team, advanced experiment equipment and perfectly-equipped scientific research bases, the faculty has cultivated a large number of high-quality professionals for the development of national economy and society over the years. The faculty has also enjoyed great reputation both at home and abroad for its graduates’ contribution covering such fields as geological hazard control, development of energy resource, transportation, hydropower, urban construction and national defense.

At present, there are nearly 200 teachers and staff in the faculty, of which 145 are full-time instructors. There are 48 professors and 74 associate professors, of which 32 are doctoral supervisors. The faculty offers 3 postdoctoral programs, 1 Doctoral degree program for second-level discipline, which is Geological Engineering, 2 Doctoral degree programs for first-level disciplines, which are Civil Engineering and Safety Science & Engineering, and 6 Master’s degree programs. Geological Engineering had been ranked as national number one discipline, “Double First-class Plan” discipline, “National Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform (985 Project)” key discipline. In the latest China Discipline Ranking, Geological Engineering has been rated as Level A+; Civil Engineering and Safety Science & Engineering are rated as Level B, both of which are key disciplines of Hubei province. The faculty offers 5 different undergraduate programs, which are Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Urban Underground Space Engineering, Exploration Technology and Engineering, and Safety Engineering. The faculty houses 9 scientific research bases, 5 departments and 1 laboratories center. It has 1939 undergraduates and 1199 graduates.

Ever since 2013, the faculty has been adhering to targeting at the national demands and the frontier of discipline development, as well as anchoring in the major area as to the national economy. It has undertaken around 800 national basic research programs and engineering application research programs, including hosting 1 National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 program), 2 National Key Research and Development Programs, 3 Key Programs supported by a grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 1 Special-funded Program on National Key Scientific Instruments and Equipment Development. There are about 20 winners of national, provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 5 winners of national, provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards. More than 700 peer-reviewed articles were published in international journals and indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded, of which 110 articles were published in journals ranked in the Tier 1 and Tier 2 zones and 4 articles were listed as Hot Papers. Furthermore, around 370 national patents were awarded.
