School of Marine Science and Technology

China University of Geosciences set up the Department of Marine Geophysics early in the 1950s and established the undergraduate majors of Marine Geology and Marine Exploration in 1961, which is one of the earliest universities in China to carry out marine geology research and develop marine geology discipline. In August 2016, in response to the strategy of "Marine Powerful Country", the university established the College of Marine Science and Technology(CMST) by integrating the advantages of discipline and personnel training.

 Over 60 years’ development, CMST has constructed a complete training system of “Bachelor-Master-Doctor-Postdoctoral Talents”in marine science, and has formed a marine research system being good at directions of“marine geology and resources” and “marine engineering and technology”. CMST hasachieved significant research results in thefollowing aspects: the tectonic evolution of marginal seas, the formation and occurrence mechanisms of deep-water oil and gas, theinvestigation of gas hydrate in seabed, theinvestigation of marine mineral resources, the exploration of seabed magnetotelluric detection, the rapid chemical exploration of seabed, thedetection and risk assessment of marine geological hazards, the monitoring and tracking of marine oil spill pollution as well as the marine hydrometeorology application, etc.

The ocean system is closely related with the destiny and the rise and fall of the Chinese nation. CMST keeps pace with the time, commits to the construction of 1) national training base for marine talents, 2) important research and development platform for marine technology development and marine engineering high technology, and contributes wisdom to the strategy of “Marine Powerful Country” and the construction of world-class universities in the field of Geoscience.
