2022 Admission Q&A for International Students

Part 1: Application and Notification

Q: Should I apply online?

A: YES.

For Chinese Government Scholarship programs, please visit the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/) to apply.

For CUG Presidential and Self-supported programs, please visit the CUG International Student Service System (http://admission.cug.edu.cn/) to apply.

Q: Should I post the application documents to CUG?

A: No. Applicants only need to register and login to the online application system and upload the required documents. All of your documents can be seen through the online application system portal. Please make sure that the documents uploaded onto the system are the latest versions.

Q: What should I do after I submit my online application

A: All the online application will be downloaded and reviewed by CUG admission committee if you submit successfully on time. After several rounds of academic review, CUG will publish the recommendation list and final list, please keep on waiting with good patience.

Q: Which program category and Agency Number should I choose in CSC application system?

A: Type B programs generally refer to the scholarship programs which are independently managed by Chinese universities and fall into the category of Chinese Government Scholarship - Chinese University Program (CGS-CUP), such as the University Postgraduate Program and Silk Road Program. If you apply for CGS-CUP programs at CUG, you need to choose Type B, and the Agency Number of CUG is 10491.

Q: What is the application deadline, and when the scholarship result will be announced?

A: 1. Chinese Government Scholarship programs:

The deadline for Chinese Government Scholarship - Chinese University Postgraduate Program is March 15th. The CSC system will still be open after the deadline and applicants who need to update or revise the online application materials could withdraw and re-submit the application before March 25th. Please be noted that if you make any change to your application after March 15th, you should send an email titled “Changes of CSC application+Nationality+Serial Number” to overseas@cug.edu.cn.

The deadline for Silk Road Program is April 5th 2022.

The final list of scholarship winners from CSC will be published in early or middle July.

2. CUG Presidential Scholarship and self-funded programs：

The deadline for CUG Presidential and self-funded programs is June 15th. The final list will be published before July 30th.

Part 2: Document Preparation

Q: How to prepare my study proposal/plan and my recommendation Letters?

A:❊The study plan (in Chinese or English) should be no less than 1000 words. It will be used as an important basis for reviewing your application. Please write it with all your creative mind and talented thoughts. It should not only describe your motivation and background, but also your academic achievements, professional skills and future plans; the research proposal of a Ph.D. student shall be signed by the supervisor who is going to accept the applicant.

❊Two recommendation letters (written only in Chinese or English) will also be taken as an important basis for reviewing your application. So please don't use those cliche templates just for convenience. The recommendation letters should be informative and targeting. These letters shall describe the applicant’s objectives of learning in China, comprehensive abilities, and evaluation of future growth, as well as the cooperation between the supervisors or the exchange between universities both in China and abroad.

Q: My school diploma and transcripts are not in English or Chinese, what should I do?

A: Please translate them into English or Chinese, and have them notarized at the notary office.

Note: Academic records from the first to the last semesters during the high school, Bachelor’s (if applicable), Master’s (if applicable) and Ph.D. programs (if any) shall all be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending university’s academic affairs office, graduate school or student management department.

Q: What should I do if I am a fresh graduate this year and have not obtained a degree certificate yet?

A: Please go to the relevant department of your current school (Department of Education, Graduate school) to get a pre-graduation certificate to prove not only your current student status, but also the expected date of graduation and degree certificate issuing.

Q: I graduated several years ago. Should I submit any supporting document from the current employer?

A: Yes, you need to submit a certificate of employment from your current employer.

Part 3: Supervisor’s Recommendation and Pre-admission Letter (Type A & B)

Q: Should I find a supervisor in advance? And how can I contact professors in my research field?

A: We would strongly suggest applicants for postgraduate programs to contact your interested supervisors in advance. You can find all CUG supervisors’ information from the Master’s and Ph.D. program application guides via the link: https://iec.cug.edu.cn/. You will have a video interview from the professor before getting an acceptance letter (Supervisor’s Recommendation Form for Excellent International Students).

Note: Please remember not to send group emails. The emails sent to the professors should be informative. Those who have received the Supervisor’s Recommendation Form need to confirm with the professor about your research field. Supervisor’s Recommendation Form only serves as the professors’ approval of the academic ability of students and it does not equal to a proof of admission.

Q: Are there specific formats and requirements for the Professor's recommendation letter?

A: Yes, there is a specific format. Please refer to https://eniec.cug.edu.cn/info/1065/1260.htm . to download the form.

Q: What is a pre-admission letter and how can I get it?

A: There are two types of pre-admission letter at CUG. One is used to apply for Chinese Government Scholarship Type-A programs and one is for Chinese Government Scholarship Type-B programs.

The Pre-admission Letter (Type-A) is issued to applicants who are applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship - Bilateral Program (CGS-BP) through sources except universities, such as the applicants’ government, Chinese embassies or other institutions. Students who have received a pre-admission letter should submit it with their application documents when applying for CGS-BP.

Please contact the Admission and Program Development Office to apply for a Pre-admission Letter. Send the soft copies of your application documents to the email address: overseas@cug.edu.cn; the email should be titled as "Request for Pre-admission Letter (Type A), Name, Nationality".

❊From this year, a Pre-admission Letter (Type B) is compulsory to the recommended candidates for the Chinese University Postgraduate Program. The recommended candidates must upload it together with all your documents. Please be noted that only after you are put on the recommendation list will the university give a pre-admission letter to you. The university will contact you and send you the letter if you pass the university's review. You could not apply for it before you are confirmed as a recommended candidate.

Note: The pre-admission letter will not guarantee your chance in getting any type of scholarship.

Part 4: Language Requirement

Q What is the language requirement of CUG for admission to the Chinese Government Scholarship?

A: Chinese language requirement: For Bachelor’s program applicants, the Chinese language requirement is HSK 3 and for Chinese-taught graduate program applicants, the requirement is HSK 4.

Please note that The Chinese Government Scholarship undergraduate students who have HSK3 certificates but have not reach the level of HSK 4 (with score 200 or above) or HSK5 (required by majors related to management) must study Chinese for one year in one of the preparatory universities designated by the CSC and pass the Final Exam before commencing the major study. The Chinese Government Scholarship postgraduate students who have HSK4 certificates but could not reach the score 220 or above or the level of HSK5 (required by majors related to management) must study Chinese for one year at CUG and reach the required score of HSK4 or HSK5 before commencing the major study.

English language requirement: For English-taught program applicants, if they do not complete the highest degree in English-speaking countries or from schools where English is the teaching language, it is required to provide proof of English proficiency. The requirement is TOEFL ibt 80 or IELTS 6.0 overall or above.

Note: The Bachelor’s programs supported by Chinese Government Scholarship should be taught in Chinese.

Q: What English-taught programs can I choose at CUG if I am outside China?

A: The following programs are currently available:
