Three Gorges Research Center

Feb 14, 2025

Three Gorges Research Center for Geo-hazard (abbr. TGRC), established in 2008 under the approval of Ministry of Education, is a comprehensive open platform devoting to geological disasters research activities. The TGRC involves seven first-level disciplines, which are Geology, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Geophysics, Environmental Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Conservancy Engineering, Management Science and Engineering. The TGRC platform mainly consist of a large scale filed test site constructed in Badong County of Three Gorges reservoir area, a field test site in Zigui County, a comprehensive in-site teaching and research base made up of six research laboratories and a multifunctional database platform for geological disasters.

TGRC constructs and operates the 985 innovative platform for key disciplines of geohazards research in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region of the Yangtze River (abbr. Three Gorges Platform). The platform currently has 20 permanent staff and 30 part-time staff, including 1 scholar in “The Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, 1 Chief Scientist of Project 973, and 1 National Outstanding Teacher. TGRC has built up 15 geohazards laboratories in Zigui and Wuhan, 6 stations (networks) of geohazards and environmental monitoring scientifically distributed in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. It possesses more than 50 sets of state-of-the-art large-scale experimental apparatus and field monitoring equipment.

After 11 years of development, TGRC has become a science popularization base of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering. During the National Engineering Geology Conference 2018, the Badong Field Test Site was listed as one of the Top 10 Achievements of Engineering Geology in recent years.
